Show
Cause Contempt Proceedings.
Our attorneys regularly attend show cause hearings for failure to pay child support
for both the payor and payee. If you are faced with contempt proceedings for
failing to pay child support, you may be incarcerated for nonpayment. We can
defend you in order to give you the second chance that you need, and we may be
able to reduce the amount of your child support obligation.
General Information Regarding FOC
A government agency called "Friend of the Court" (FOC) represents
the interests of the minor children in family law matters, especially child support.
That is necessary because the attorneys only represent the parties (the husband
and wife). For most support matters, an FOC Referee makes recommendations to
the judge.
The non custodial parent usually pays child support to the custodial parent until
the child reaches 18 years of age (or a maximum of 19 years old). The amount
of support that must be paid is based on a formula unless there are special circumstances,
which is rare. Gifts, clothes, transportation, vacation expenses and rent are
not considered child support.
